Turkish general slams Zana statement
An official investigation has been launched against Leyla Zana, who said
during March 21 Newroz celebrations that Kurds saw Barzani, Talabani and
Ocalan as their leaders.
Mar 27, 2007
WASHINGTON – A statement by well known activist Leyla Zana that Kurds saw
two senior Iraqi Kurdish politicians and Adbullah Ocalan as their natural
leaders was an invitation to Kurds in Iraq to interfere in Turkey’s domestic
affairs, a senior Turkish general said late Monday.
General Ergin Saygun, the deputy chief of the Turkish General Staff, said in
an interview with television station NTV that by this statement Zana had
invited Iraqi Kurds to intervene in Turkey and that the state would do what
was necessary to prevent this.
On March 21, during an address to crowds in the south eastern Turkish city
of Diyarbakir to mark Nevruz, the traditional festival to celebrate the
coming of spring, Zana said that Massoud Barzani, the head of the
semi-autonomous Kurdish administration in the north of Iraq; Jelal Talabani,
Iraqi’s President; and Abdullah Ocalan, the imprisoned chief of the
terrorist group the PKK were seen by Kurds as their leaders.
"I see these as very serious and dangerous statements," Saygun said.
Such a statement made all Turkish citizens look like they were terrorists,
the general said, adding that he believed that citizens would react to the
statement.
He also underlined that Iraq had yet to officially declare the PKK to be a
terrorist organisation.
Earlier Monday, during a meeting of the annual conference of the Turkish
American Council in Washington, General Saygun said that while the PKK was
on the list of terrorist organisations of many countries, the measures taken
against it were weak in practice.
"Some believe that terrorism started with September 11," he said. "It’s not
like that. Terrorism began a long time ago. You may adopt resolutions
against terror, but what matters is the practice."

70 Iraqis massacred in revenge attacks
Via NY Transfer News Collective * All the News that Doesn’t Fit
AFP – Mar 28, 2007
http://www.afp.com/english/news/stories/070328191756.i0kqevdp.html
70 Iraqis massacred in revenge attacks
MOSUL, Iraq (AFP) – Gunmen massacred 70 men in an overnight rampage in
revenge for bombings that killed 85 people in an ethnically mixed Iraqi
town that US President George W. Bush once hailed as a beacon of hope.
Iraqi army Brigadier General Khorshid Dosti said 70 people were shot
dead in an unprecedented reprisal assault on the town of Tal Afar on
Tuesday, while another 40 remained missing and 30 more were wounded.
"We received 45 bodies of handcuffed and blindfolded men from al-Wahada
neighbourhood overnight. They were killed yesterday just after the
bomb," a hospital doctor had told AFP earlier in the day on condition
of anonymity.
The mass shooting and lethal bombings underscore the raging sectarian
warfare that continues to grip the country, alongside a Sunni
insurgency against the Shiite-led government and its US backers.
The massacre of men, believed all to have been Sunni Arabs, was in
revenge for bomb attacks that killed 85 people and wounded 183 in
Shiite districts of the mixed town on Tuesday.
The town is witnessing its worst violence since Bush in March 2006 held
up the onetime militant stronghold as a model for efforts to create a
stable Iraq.
In the deadliest blast, a suicide bomber tricked soldiers into
believing he was delivering food supplies to a Shiite area where he
detonated his cargo of explosives in a crowd of waiting men and women.
Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Ahmed Salah, a spokesman for the Iraqi army
in the provincial capital of Mosul, confirmed there had been a
"reprisal act."
"A violent incident happened (on Tuesday) and a reprisal act happened
in al-Wahada, which is in the south of the town, just after the
bombings," he said.
"The situation is under control right now and we have started an
investigation into the incident."
The Iraqi army has slapped a strict curfew on the town, deployed
armoured vehicles in the city centre and banned even police from
moving, an official said, also on condition of anonymity.
The style of the revenge killings, with the victims handcuffed and
blindfolded, suggested they were the work of Shiite militias which have
carried out a wave of such attacks against Sunnis in the capital.
The US military said Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki had formed a
committee composed of defence and interior ministry officials to
investigate the Tal Afar attacks.
In other violence, 12 people were killed on Wednesday.
Two Iraqi policemen died in attacks on a local government building in
the former rebel stronghold of Fallujah in western Iraq. Truck bombs
loaded with chlorine gas were used, officials said.
A civilian was also wounded in an attack which targeted a joint
Iraqi-US centre.
US First Lieutenant Shawn Mercer told AFP from Fallujah that two
suicide truck bombers exploded chlorine gas near the building.
Insurgents loyal to Al-Qaeda have a strong presence in Al-Anbar
province, which has seen a spate of attacks using chemical bombs,
especially chlorine, against security forces and civilians.
In another car bombing, two people were killed and 20 wounded in
Al-Iman, near the town of Al-Mahawil south of Baghdad. Elsewhere eight
more people were killed.
US officials meanwhile announced the deaths of two more servicemen and
two civilians in Iraq.
One of the civilians, a contractor died on Tuesday after being wounded
by rocket fire near the US embassy in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green
Zone the previous day, US charge d’affaires Daniel Speckhard said.
One of the soldiers was also killed in a separate indirect fire attack
in the Green Zone along with a US civilian, the military said. The
attack left another soldier and two US civilians wounded.
US military spokesman Rear Admiral Mark Fox told reporters that the
attacks on the Green Zone showed "desperation" on the part of
insurgents following the security clampdown in Baghdad.
The latest deaths brought to 3,237 the US military’s losses in Iraq
since the March 2003 invasion.

Treat Parisians with respect and they will respond accordingly!
http://www.thefirstpost.co.uk/index.php?menuID=4&subID=1293
The myth of the rude Parisians – I’ve not met a single one! Some
assistants in the cheaper shops can be rather brusque, otherwise I’ve
found Parisians helpful and lively. What they love is that you should
engage with them properly and they put up signs to encourage it:
N’Avez Pas Peur is currently everywhere. Another: Le beau est toujours
bizarre (Baudelaire). A man in Passy did an about-turn to escort me to
the door of Balzac’s house a good minute away. One Parisienne went out
of her way to explain the glories on offer in a Greek deli nearby.

How come the Muzzies don’t have wisdom then?
Whys is it they terrorize, punish then become pedophiles?
Why can’t they distinguish right from wrong?
Last Question: How come they don’t read, understand or follow the law of

Iran’s president cancels U.N. appearance
By ALEXANDRA OLSON
Associated Press Writer
UNITED NATIONS – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad canceled a trip to
New York to address the U.N. Security Council before it votes on whether to
impose further sanctions against his country for refusing to stop enriching
uranium, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Friday.
The decision came as diplomats from the five veto-wielding members of the
Security Council — the U.S., Britain, France, China and Russia — and
Germany held a flurry of last-minute negotiations in New York on a draft
resolution seeking to pressure Iran to comply.
The six powers want a vote on the resolution by Saturday, but diplomats
said that could be delayed by efforts to reach consensus to give the
sanctions more weight.
The sanctions, agreed on last week by the six powers, would ban Iranian
arms exports and freeze the assets of 28 additional individuals and
organizations involved in Iran’s nuclear and missile programs. About a
third of those are linked to the Revolutionary Guard, an elite military
corps.
Ahmadinejad said earlier this month that he wanted to take his case for
pursuing nuclear power to the Security Council himself. Earlier Friday, a
council diplomat said the Iranian president would arrive in New York at 1
a.m. Saturday, just hours before the council is expected to meet.
But Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammed Ali Hosseini told Iranian
state television later in the day that the trip had been scrapped because
of "America’s obstruction in issuing visas" to the Iranian delegation that
was to travel to New York.
Hosseini said that instead of Ahmadinejad, Foreign Minister Manouchehr
Mottaki will attend the Security Council meeting and "explain Iran’s
position regarding its nuclear activities."
"Due to open failure by the United States to issue visas for members of the
Iranian delegation accompanying President Ahmadinejad and the air crew,
American authorities have effectively prevented President Ahmadinejad from
attending the U.N. security council meeting," Hosseini said.
Mohammad Mir Ali Mohammadi, press secretary of Iran’s mission at the U.N.,
told The Associated Press that the U.S. did not deliver a visa to the U.S.
Embassy in Bern, Switzerland, in time for Ahmadinejad to pick it up before
flying to New York for the Saturday session.
He said Russia and China were trying to postpone the session until Monday
and if the session was put off Ahamdinejad would decide whether to come.
Tom Casey, a State Department spokesman, said in Washington that 39 visas
had been issued for Ahmadinejad and other Iranian officials and their
passports had been returned to Iranian diplomats in Bern by Friday morning.
He said another 36 passports with visas were ready later in the day.
The U.S. says Iran’s nuclear efforts are cover for a weapons program, but
Tehran insists it only wants electricity.
In December, the Security Council voted unanimously to impose limited
sanctions on Iran, ordering all countries to stop supplying Iran with
materials and technology that could contribute to its nuclear and missile
programs and to freeze assets of 10 key Iranian companies and 12
individuals related to those programs. Iran responded by expanding its
enrichment program.
Several non-permanent members of the Security Council have resisted the
draft resolution, agreed upon last week by the five council powers and
Germany.
In an effort to overcome their concerns, Russia proposed a compromise Friday
over a proposal by Indonesia and Qatar calling for the Middle East to be
free of weapons of mass destruction and the missiles to deliver them.
Including such an appeal could have implications for Israel, a U.S. ally
widely believed to possess nuclear weapons, though it has never officially
acknowledged it.
The Russian proposal would include a recognition that "a solution to the
Iranian nuclear issue would contribute global non-proliferation efforts,
including those in the Middle East."
France and Britain approved of the wording, while the United States was
considering it, said Axel Crau, a spokesman for France’s U.N. mission.
"It’s definitely a key point and probably the key to unanimity," Crau said.
He said the resolution’s co-sponsors — France, Germany and Britain —
still wanted to call a vote Saturday but may delay it to seek consensus.
"For the sake of unanimity we are willing to make some efforts because
unanimity has a value," he said.
Alejandro Wolff, the acting U.S. Ambassador to the
United Nations, said the nuclear debate should not be affected by the Iranian seizure of
15 British sailors and marines in the Persian Gulf Friday.

UNITED NATIONS (CNN) — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has
canceled a planned visit to the United Nations, and Tehran’s U.N.
ambassador, Javad Zarif, on Friday blamed a delay in U.S. visas being
issued to the crew of his airplane.
Ahmadinejad wanted to speak to the U.N. Security Council before a vote,
scheduled for 3 p.m. ET Saturday, on sanctions against Iran.
Iran, which contends the proposed sanctions are politically motivated,
says it will still try to get high-level representation to the U.N. —
most likely the foreign minister.
The planned vote comes after the U.N.’s atomic energy watchdog agency
said last month it could not verify that Iran’s uranium enrichment
program was strictly for peaceful purposes, as Iran has said. Western
nations, including the United States, contend Iran is using the program
to develop nuclear weapons.
The five permanent members of the Security Council and Germany agreed
on a resolution to expand sanctions on Iran and presented it to the
council last week, but several nations said they wanted to amend it.
Alejandro Wolfe, the acting U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said
Thursday that some amendments were agreed to, but he offered no details
about those.
"We embraced amendments that were consistent with the philosophy of
this resolution … and those that would enhance its clarity and
enhance its value," he said.
Also Thursday, Dumisani Kumalo, the U.N. ambassador from South Africa,
which holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council this month,
said he felt steamrollered into a Saturday vote on the resolution.
"I feel like I was misled," he said, adding that he had been led to
believe that he would have more time to consider the resolution.
But French Ambassador Jean-Marc de la Sabliere rebutted Kumalo’s
comments, saying discussions have gone on for some time.
"And we have the whole day tomorrow to discuss it," he said.
